Child eye exams are absolutely crucial! A child’s first eye examination should be at the age of 6 months, then yearly after that. Children's eye examinations are fully covered by Alberta Health Care up to the age of 19 years. The primary goal of an eye exam at 6 months of age is to screen for any serious eye conditions such as eye turns, genetic conditions affecting the back of the eye or cancer of the eye. Those conditions that can be treated must be treated right away to avoid any progression. Once the child gets older, then their eye exam is focused more towards eye teaming abilities, eye movement abilities, and their prescription, while keeping a close eye on their eye health each year. At Urban Eyecare, we love seeing children of all ages. We use specialized child-friendly equipment to help examine all aspects of a child’s vision and eye health. Dr. Palki Arora has undergone additional training to focus on child vision and development, she is board certified in Vision Therapy.

Studies have shown that 1 in 4 school-aged children have a vision problem. This can be related to their visual acuity, eye focusing or eye teaming skills. Often, children do not complain of any visual problems. This makes it even more important to get their routine eye exams every year. Eye problems in children include blurry vision, eye strain, eye pain, double vision, dry eyes etc. If left untreated, eye problems in children can start impacting their school performance or can sometimes be misdiagnosed as behavioural problems such as ADHD and dyslexia.
