EYE HEALTH ISSUES
Glaucoma is a serious ocular condition with a genetic component. In most cases, the pressure of the fluid inside your eye starts to increase, which in turn, starts to damage the nerve that takes the information from our eyes back to the brain. As a result, we start losing our side vision. Glaucoma is a silent disease as the loss of side vision progresses slowly over the years without any detection by the individual until it is severe. Glaucoma screenings are a part of the routine eye examination at Urban Eyecare where the pressure inside your eye is measured and the nerve is assessed to ensure that there are no signs of this sight-threatening condition.
Diabetes is a common systemic condition, which can severely impact the eye health. Diabetic changes include leakages of blood vessels, formation of fat deposits, and swelling of the eye, all evident when your eye doctor assesses the back of the eye. Early detection of diabetes-related ocular changes is important as it can sometimes be reversed and it allows the individual to control their blood sugar levels before their vision starts to deteriorate. All individuals with diabetes should have a dilated fundus examination to assess their ocular health once every year.
This condition affects the part of our eye which helps us focus clearly on objects. It has a genetic component, and is undetectable by the individual until it reaches its severe stages. Early changes associated with age related macular degeneration can be easily detected by the eye doctor during your routine eye exam and appropriate measures can then be taken to prolong the disease progression.
Dry eye disease is a very common and debilitating condition, which is much more than just your eyes feeling dry. An individual with dry eye disease could experience a variety of symptoms ranging from burning, irritation, dryness, itchiness, grittiness, contact-lens sensitivity, pain, redness, foreign body sensation, and soreness. There are two main causes of dry eye disease: lack of adequate tear secretion by the gland that produces tears, and quick evaporation of tears from our ocular surface once they are produced. The treatment for dry eye can range anywhere from unclogging the oil glands of the eye to nutritional supplements to the use of corticosteroid drops and other prescription eye drops.
Our doctors at Urban Eyecare have a special interest in dry eye disease treatment and have received extra training and performed research in the area of dry eye disease. We stay current in our knowledge of the advancements in the treatment of dry eye disease and apply that knowledge to treat those with this dynamic condition on a routine basis.
Vision therapy consists of a series of eye exercises performed to treat conditions such as eye tracking, eye focusing and eye teaming disorders. These are common in children, and result in eye fatigue, headaches, double vision, and intolerance to reading for long periods of time. As a result, these children do not like to read, and start to fall behind in school and their learning is hindered. These conditions cannot be typically treated with glasses, and require vision therapy, which strengthens their eye muscles to make them more efficient. These exercises also strengthen the interaction between the eyes and the brain so the brain can respond quickly and efficiently to a change in visual stimuli. Call our clinic to find out if your child is a candidate for vision therapy!
These include red eyes, dry eyes, itchy eyes, pink eye, flashes of light in vision, floaters in vision or any other visual disturbance. Visits to the eye doctor for ocular health related issues are covered by Alberta Health Care for individuals of all ages at any time. It is important get any ocular or visual disturbances assessed as some of them can lead vision loss and other require immediate treatment to prevent them from progressing. At Urban Eyecare, we understand the urgent nature of these visits and will accommodate you into our schedule on a same-day basis.
The most common cataract consists of a yellowing of the lens that is present inside of our eye. Routine monitoring of cataracts by an eyecare professional is important to determine whether the cataracts are stable, progressing or at the point where they require surgery.
